Towards the end of the war Hitler ordered to form a special penal unit (Strafbataillon) composed of German dissidents and prisoners. The 999th Penal Division was sent to fight in Erwin Rommel's African Corps. While in Rommel's army many of the 999th disserted and surrendered to the Americans. It became to be known as one of the largest surrenders in military history, as over 150,000 men were taken prioners and shipped to the Normandy and the US.
